They have been very helpful and that made the difference between the two. We weren't looking for an escorted tour. I know I could have booked the same, but worked out I couldn't do it much cheaper. I thought having a local book, as we would be booking from Oz, would make things easier.

Ferry to juneau for a few days and visit Tracy Arm. Fly to Faibanks for a couple of days then make our way down to Anchorage over a week or so with activities on the way, mostly by train. They certainly do not have the franchise to book the ferries or any other form of transportation on AK. They just like you, me, a travel agent can book travel on AK ferries, trains, etc.

What they might have to offer you is more knowledge of the booking systems and travel within AK than you do. So like a travel agent they add some value to an existing product. You decide whether you want to pay for their service or whether you'd rather do the planning and booking yourself. This tends to make following the thread quite hard to read and often it cannot be worked out who the reply is meant for. In regard to just booking the ferries yourself, I agree with the comments above, but working out the scheds from the AMHS website can be a nightmare.
